For Alex Weiss, a senior at St. Michael’s College in Vermont and the Broadcast and Creative Assistant for the University of Vermont’s Athletic Program, mindfulness isn’t about stillness—it’s about being fully immersed in the moment, whether through creative expression or pushing through the grind. From traveling with the men’s soccer team on their historic path to winning UVM’s first National Championship to joining the basketball team at March Madness, Alex hasn’t just had a front-row seat to perseverance and passion—he’s lived it through his own journey.
Mindfulness Through the Lens
Photography is Alex’s passion, but passion doesn’t always equate to peace. His love for photography runs deep, sometimes feeling like the best thing in the world and other times a frustrating challenge. Yet, within that struggle, he finds presence. Whether capturing intense athletic moments or sketching his surroundings in Costa Rica, the creative process allows him to step into a flow state where distractions fade away. It’s not about forcing balance but embracing the push and pull of creation.
Finding Peace in the Grind
For Alex, peace isn’t always found in stillness—it’s in motion, in the challenge, in the act of doing. Running, lifting heavy, or playing basketball provides him with the ultimate reset. The moments immediately after a hard-fought workout or a tough creative project—when exhaustion meets accomplishment—that’s where he feels true peace. It’s in the grind, the perseverance, and the push to the finish line that he finds clarity.
The Power of Awareness and Growth
Alex’s journey with mindfulness has evolved through experience. He acknowledges that no one truly understands mindfulness until they’re in a position where they need it. He’s faced burnout, self-doubt, and the pressures of balancing work, school, and personal aspirations. But through these experiences, he’s learned that self-awareness and resilience are key. Therapy, self-reflection, and learning to embrace the ups and downs have played crucial roles in his growth.
